Semi-monthly payroll is a process of paying employees twice a month on the fixed days of the month like 1st and 15th of the month hence cover 24 times in a year. Bi-weekly means payment is done every two weeks; they make 26 discrete payroll cycles annually. The difference is that bi-weekly pay entails two additional weeks quarterly, and although each paycheck is a bit less than the semi-monthly pay, there are more of them in a year. As for businesses, this may directly influence their cash flow and budgeting, if the schedule is based on it, employees would get different amounts on their checks likewise.
